Chapter 10

“You may have everyone else fooled into thinking you’re this great man now, but I know the real you, Father,” Silas states angrily. “You’re the same selfish bastard you always were, and there’s nothing you can do or say that will make me change my mind about you.”

“If you would just let me—” Jered begins but is quickly cut off by Silas.

“You’re wasting your time and your breath!” he screams at Jered. “There’s nothing I want to hear come out of your mouth except goodbye!”

I feel thankful that I went to my bedroom in the palace to retrieve something for Silas. This seems like the perfect moment to give it to him.

I walk over to his bedside and hand him something that should shut him up long enough for Jered to say what’s on his mind.

Silas looks at the thin paper napkin in my outstretched hand with the IOU and his signature on it.

“You kept it all this time?” he asks, looking shocked that I would hang on to something he gave me like a treasured item.

“I thought it might come in handy one day if I ever found you,” I reply as he takes the note from my hand. “It’s time for you to pay me back by remaining quiet while your father speaks his piece.”

“But—” Silas begins to protest.

I quickly hold up my right hand, palm forward, to stop the flow of his next words.

“No. There’s no ‘but’ that’s going to get you out of hearing what Jered has been wanting to say to you for years. You owe me, Silas. Now sit there and listen without interrupting him. Afterward, you can ask Jered to leave if you want, but not before he’s through talking. Is that understood?”

“I see you’re still as bossy as I remember,” Silas grouses. He lays the napkin on his lap, crosses his arms over his chest, and then looks over at Jered, petulantly waiting for him to say something.

Jered looks a little surprised that my ploy worked so well, but he doesn’t question his good fortune. He takes advantage of the time I’ve been able to give him to make his heartfelt plea to his son.

“I was a horrible father to you,” Jered starts out, surprising me with his frankness. “There’s nothing I can do to change what I did to you in the past, and I’m not even sure there’s anything I can do for you now that can make up for what I put you through when you were a child. I could make up a whole host of excuses to explain what I did to you back then, but none of them would change the fact that I was unforgivably cruel. I was so lost in my own world of pain that all I could see was red, and you ended up suffering through the brunt of my anger. I will always hate myself for placing you in that position, but I want you to know I have always loved you.
